Motif Organizes its 8th Annual Blood Donation Drive – 2010

Charity walk raises Rs 45.5 lakh

More than 8000 Amdavadis took part in the eighth Annual Motif Charity walk. The 5-km walk and an 8-km run was flagged off by Director General of Police S S Khandwawala from the ATIRA main building at 7 am on Sunday. The charity walk raised Rs 45.5 lakh which will go to underprivileged children of Apang Manav Mandal, Gramshree Trust, Navjeevan Charitable Trust, Society for the Welfare of the Mentally Retarded and Swavalamban Trust.

AHMEDABAD: On this Valentine`s Day, Amdavadis showered their love on some very special people, who we often tend to forget because of our busy life.

The 8th Annual Motif Charity Walk -2010, an event endorsed by 55 corporates, kicked off on Sunday with a release of hundreds of orange, green and white balloons in the sky forming a cloud over thousands of participants, who were dressed in their Motif Charity Walk tees with a slogan of Together, we can make a difference`.

Quickly after the gun shot, signaling the start of the walk, the walkers weaved through crowds to make their way.

The walk was no less festive than the spirit of the walkers. Team of Motif volunteers cheered the walkers as they made their way from ATIRA-Panjrapol circle-passport office- University circle-IIM-A and back to ATIRA`s main lawn.

Right through the walk, upbeat music reverberated as bands from schools like LML and DPS played for the walkers.

Kalpesh Borad, 17, a student of Apang Manav Mandal, cycled his way with rest of the walkers and his other schoolmates. “I enjoyed listening to the music on our way. This walk gave me a chance to hang out with my friends and literally meet thousands of people,” he said.

As the walkers made their way back to ATIRA`s main lawn after a festive walk, another festivity of exciting quizes, goodies and prizes awaited them. The event was hosted by RJ Dhwanit and RJ Meghna.

DGP S S Khandwawala added to the already delightful occasion by announcing lucky draw winners.

Although Amdavadis had a gala walk, the focus still remained on the NGOs and their cause. Five NGOs associated with this year`s walks are Apang Manav Mandal, which runs schools with hostels for physically challenged children; Gramshree Trust that works for women artisans to make them self-employed; Navjeevan Charitable Trust, which operates a day care for mentally challenged and cerebral palsied children; Society for the Welfare of the Mentally Retarded that focuses on transforming mentally challenged individuals into self-sustained citizens; and finally Swavalamban Trust that runs a rehabilitation of leprosy affected people.

Over 8,500 registered walkers, from all sections of the society, walked hand in hand to raise over Rs 45.5 lakh for the associated NGOs.

A charity walk, focusing on health awareness, which started with 700 walkers has evolved to 7,000 and is still adding to the registered walkers’ list this year.
